Testimony
I grew up in the church but church was what you did on Sunday and Wednesdays. I never thought of God as someone who wanted to have a big part of my life. I never really talked about God outside of church. In my class from 3rd through 8th grade you were either Lutheran or Catholic. But we never talked about God. I never saw anyone trying to live out the Christian life. The people who did talk about God and Jesus were very legalistic. I heard more about Hell and how bad I was and I did not hear about Jesus love. I got to a point where I decided that I would rather go to Hell than be in Heaven with those people. They were trying to get me to Heaven but what they were really doing is pushing me away from God.
Things changed for me in 94 when my older brother gave his life to Christ. Yes he started out legalistic but I could see that he was doing it because he loved me and he did not want me to go to Hell. I was not ready to give up the things he was telling me to give up so after awhile I just tried to avoid him as best I could. But one thing he did is always give me Christian stuff for my birthday and Christmas - Christian rock music and teaching tapes. I did see that my brother was really trying to live the Christian life. He was not just talk like some of the other people that I came into contact with. But I still could not make the connection with God I needed to.
But in 97 that would change. I guess my search for God began in 94 when my brother gave his life to christ but it ended in 97. It was during the summer of that year my roommates went home for the summer and I stayed to take summer classes at college. One night Everett invited me to the Colby fair and there was a guy selling Christian music. He had some hard rock stuff that really got a hold of me. I will never forget listing to Mortification and Strong Arm for the first time. I felt like God was all around me at that point. A month after that I came home from a party and turned on public radio. They were playing hard rock it was Christian and I got to know the host of the show. He sent me some cds and that really helped me out. Then one August night it finally happened. Everett and I went to the Stockton fair and I got another Mortification cd they had an 18 minute song going through the birth death and resurrection of Christ and, by the end of the song, I was on my floor of my bedroom crying out to God. It was there all alone in my apartment I gave my life to Christ.
